Does URL length Affect SEO?

People often wonder, Do shorters URLs make an impact as compared to long URLs in SEO? They also say Google discriminates against long URLs as compared to short URLs in ranking. They think a short URL is better all the way. However, is this true or we don't know about it?

In this brainstorming, you will get the point.

In a nutshell, when it comes to ranking, SEO, URL length doesn't matter whether it's long URLs or short URLs. Google itself has stated officially that it doesn't discriminate against long URLs over short URLs.

I think you've understood it. However, we should know some things regarding this topic.

First of all, Google uses URLs as identifiers(location) it doesn't matter how long they are. I try to keep them shorter than 5000 words. However, it doesn't mean that long URLs will not rank higher on Google if their content is original or unique. I've seen dozens of long URLs ranking higher on Google because of only good content. I use short URLs just to make monitoring easier. In addition, the number of slashes in there also doesn't matter.

I'm currently only aware of only one part of Google systems where the URL length plays a role which is canonicalization. Canonicalization is what happens when Google finds multiple copies of a page on any website. And Google has to pick one URL to use for indexing if Google finds a shorter and cleaner URL. Then its systems tend to select that one. This doesn't affect ranking. It's purely a matter of which URL is shown in the search.

Key Takeaways
  • Neither the URL length nor the number of slashes matter in SEO.
  • Make sure you know Canonicalization.
  • Use a URL structure that works for you in which you can keep for the long run.
  • Don't listen to awful webmasters that provide useless information on SEO.
  • Only content is crucial. URLs length can not define page quality.
  • Keep the URL of your article as long as you think it is better.

Conclusion

People get confused because of wrong information about SEO being spread on youtube, search engines, social media. Fake SEO experts are making new webmasters fool. If you want to understand this concept in layman languages, keep your eyes on this example.
For instance,
Let's assume, there is a good and amazing barber salon in your area. Moreover, he cuts good hair cut and styles way better than the existing salon in your area. However, it's 2km away from your home. And there is a bad salon situated next to your home.
So, what should you do?

You will go 2km away from your home. Because that salon is nice. It doesn't matter whether it's 2km away. It's all the same in the case of search engines. However, in Google search, a reader doesn't have to go 2km away. He needs only substantial information. It doesn't matter for him where the content is placed whether it's in a long or short URL. Hence, don't be obsessed with it, it's a piece of cake.
